Cricket Section Annual Dinner and Awards Night - Reminder
Posted on Friday 28th October 2016 by Colin Dawson
An important date for your diaries please!
The annual dinner and awards night will take place in the Clubhouse on the evening of Friday, 4 November 2016.
As usual this is intended to be very much a family and friends evening. Around 70 people of all ages attended last year's event.
Emails [3] have been sent to all members, parents and friends of the Cricket Section at various times in October and several award winners have yet to respond. Plenty of places are still available. Final date for bookings is 12 noon on Monday, 31 October.

James Hamilton Smith - "Jimmy the Pie"
Posted on by Colin Dawson
It is with great sadness that the Cricket Section learned of the passing of Jimmy "The Pie" Smith on 26 October 2016 after a short illness.
An extract from the notification to members stated "As his family notes, the Club and School were amongst the most important organisations in Jimmy's life and he devoted much of his energies in upholding their traditions. He will be greatly missed by his family and everyone across the Academical community."
Jimmy was a talented cricketer who played 1st XI cricket for Accies in the 50's and 60's eventually captaining the team in 1961 and 1962, long before the advent of league cricket for any club outwith the "closed shop" of the Western Union. According to the Club Centenary Book his record as captain during those two years was P 55, W25, D 8, L 17, Aban 5.
He never lost his love for the game after mothballing his whites including the legendary white 1st XI Captain's jacket embroidered with the Academical colours. Jimmy continued to encourage and promote the game of cricket at all levels at New Anniesland and became chairman of the Section in 1988 holding the post continuously until 2002. Right up to the present day Jimmy, whenever possible, would be seen at the Club supporting the team, latterly in his wheelchair in the care of his devoted wife, Hazel, and/or sons Iain and Graham.
The game of cricket owes much to Jimmy and he will be fondly remembered by all who came into contact with him. Of course it was not just cricket to which Jimmy devoted his energy - rugby was also high on his priority list. The writer remembers in his youth awaiting the hand written weekly postcard advising him of his selection for Accies 7th XV - long beofre the days of email. A legend indeed!
