Match Report - Accies v St. Michaels

The 1XI made it 3 from 3 in 2006 with a comprehensive victory in Dumfries.

After Thursday's downpour, it seemed unlikely that anyone in the West would be travelling anywhere come Saturday, but a sunny Friday ensured that fixture week two went ahead.

Fraser won his second toss for the season and chose to bat on a wicket which played better than it first looked. That said, a few kept low, and it was this lack of bounce that did for Ed Hunter, as he was bowled trying to pull a ball that was never really there for the shot. Accies predicament grew as Fraser Murray dipped into Randy's technical manual, spooning to mid-off, and Dan Scott was sharply caught at point driving loosely.

Richard Andrew, looking good and getting his second start in as many league games, and Andrew Dodson tried to rebuild, but their partnership was short-lived, as Randy nicked off to spinner Goodwin. Dodson fell shortly afterwards, stumped charging the same bowler -- according to Fritzy, he "is still trying to regain his ground."

At 63-5, it fell again on the youngsters to bail Accies out of trouble with the bat. And they did not disappoint. Euan Sheridan and Roddy Kelso amassed 84 runs in partnership -- easily the match's highest -- by playing their shots and riding their luck. When St. Michaels finally managed to hold one and Sheri fell 4 short of a maiden 1XI 50, Accies were right back in the game. Roddy fell shortly afterwards to an lbw decision which was -- allegedly -- dubious.

Andy Smith took the sword to the St. Michaels attack at the death, converting half-volleys into straight 4s with impressive consistency. His high-score of 35* took Accies to 193-9 -- certainly a fighting total.

As the reply began, it became clear that, though Al Miller struggled to control extensive inswing early on, St. Michaels would never get close. Wickets fell regularly, with Kash and Al finding their feet and claiming 3 apiece.

Richard Andrew took up the attack, keeping it tight and eventually forcing stubborn opener Smith into a wild hack, brilliantly caught by Roddy at mid-on. If it wasn't before, the game was then dead as a contest, and Accies ran through the tail -- Randy claiming his best ever bowling analysis of 4-18. A sign of the returns to come from him, Accies must hope.

The 130 run victory gave Accies the perfect start to the season -- 100% in 2 -- and makes a good platform to build on for a successful campaign.
