Match report

The fine recent form of the Alps XI continued with a mightily thrilling victory over Ardencaple on Saturday. You might recall the result of the first match between the sides, where Alps' manly 137 was chased down rather quickly by a rampant Helensburgh XI. This match was very different indeed, with a gutsy team perfomance resulting in a narrow victory for Alps by 20 runs in a tremendously tense finish.

Alps were put in to bat by the gleeful captain of our opponents, no doubt intent on skittling us out for another early finish. The Alps' batsmen had other ideas though, and proceeded to bat calmly and efficiently on a rapid outfield. Many decent contributions were made, but we were very grateful indeed to have John Oliver, fresh from his century versus Dollar Academy in the school match, who carried on his fine form by bludgeoning 55 vital runs for the Alps team. A healthy total of 172 was posted: decent, but not insurmountable by any means.

After tea, all looked good for Alps, as wickets tumbled in quick succession and thoughts turned to an early victory for the home XI. Cricket always has its surprises in store though, and a huge partnership between captain Anderson and Stocks brought the visitors right back into the match. With one wicket remaining, and only 20 runs needed from four overs, things suddenly looked bleak; but out of the blue a catch was taken by John Oliver from the bowling of Hamza Gardee to grant a fine win for Alps, the second in successive matches.

Alas, there be no match this week, given the capitulation of Vale of Leven 2nd XI from the league. But the team can now focus on our exotic trip to the Isle of Bute on the 25th of June.
