Match report

The 4th XI eagerly set sail for one of the most scenic outposts of Scottish Cricket, once the various team members had turned up.

Adopting the ‘just in time’ philosophy, Accies boarded the 12.15 from Wemyss Bay with at least 15 seconds to spare. A Minibus awaited at Rothesay Pier to complete our journey to the Meadows.

Winning the toss, skipper McLaren elected to field, on a goodish looking track with notably short boundaries, on the hottest day of the summer so far.

A creditable bowling performance ensued against a decidedly strong Bute County side. Cochrane can justifiably be pleased with his 3-for after a tidy opening spell.

M Crichton was in formidable form, blasting 7 sixes on his way to 85, before being brilliantly held down the legside by keeper McLaren off the ever-deceptive bowling of Bashir, who also bowled Australia-bound G Gray with a massive leggie.

The youngsters all maintained a tight line and were economical.

Ahuja was introduced late into the attack and wickets fairly tumbled to his nagging offspin (4-13).

Accies batting looked a bit fragile. S Page, surely too low down the order at 6, and C Allen, proved the exception, sharing a stand of 57 for the 6th wicket. Page was denied a second straight six by substitute fielder A Peacock, a Cumbrian cricket coach, holidaying on Bute.

When Allen took 8 from an over of Downie’s twirlers, this heralded the return of Bute’s pacemen and an Accies collapse.

The return Minibus journey prompted certain Accies players to burst spontaneously into song. Yes, Nicky, those wheels are still going round and round.

All in all, a grand day out and a most enjoyable, if a little one-sided, game of cricket.
