Match report

Hillhead tried to call this match off at lunchtime on Friday because the groundsman at Hughenden had not prepared a pitch but CD suggested that a kwik cricket style softball match be played instead.  Although weather conditions were dry throughout it was blowing the customary gale and it felt like the Arctic!  Anyhow it was at least a match.

Although only losing six wickets batting first there was the customary inability to make contact with the ball and the inevitable rash of mad run outs [three] whilst the Hillhead youngsters gave Accies 30 free runs out of a total gross score of 65 [nett 35] in wides and no balls [see below].

In reply Hillhead scored 92 for 7 [nett 57] but this included 56 free runs in wides and no balls!  Top wicket taker was Simon McAlpine-Scott with 2 whilst Ruairidh Russell was the tidiest with 1 for 8 from 3 overs including unusually 6 wides.

I have mentioned it before but persist in stating that if the lads can negate many of the wides and the daft run outs they can actually win more matches even if they don't have the batting firepower yet.  Many will have missed a very useful practice session on Sunday morning during which the emphasis was placed on bowling technique and more specifically in trying to bowl a ball so that the bowler can actually see the vertical seam all the way down the pitch.  The standard of bowling by those few that attended visibly improved - dramatically - because they were concentrating!
